One of the most important steps to take for success in freelance writing is to first decide that you want to succeed above all else. Create a strong reason “why” you need to succeed.
It should be something that makes you excited.
It is vital that it is connected to your values. While psychologists talk about turning “wants” in to “needs”, I see it in philosophical terms: why does this matter to you? Of what value is it?
Focus on this and then make a conscious decision that you will do whatever it takes. This is very important as it triggers both your conscious and subconscious mind to work towards that goal. You will find ways to get the information, mentors and clients you need, as long as you make a conscious decision.
The next step is to write this down. Put your goal in writing. Ensure that you put this somewhere you can see it daily. Beside your computer, for example.
Another valuable idea is to always have a notebook with you, and take down the ideas as they come to you.
As you go on, you can add things to it, making it a storehouse of profitable ideas.
Understand that by applying these techniques, you are applying proven strategies for success. This knowledge is backed up by studies across many decades, and by some of the worlds most successful men.
Set specific goals
Goals are the launching pad for the accomplishment of anything you desire, if you know the correct way to set them.
Make clear goals so you can track your performance. They should be both long term, and short term.
A good technique for good goal setting is SMART. They should be:
Get a sheet and start writing out your goals.
The first goal could be a monthly income figure. Now sit down and think about why you would like this to happen. Write down the sense of accomplishment it would give you. See it, feel it and get ready to take action.
Remember to have short and long term goals.
Long-term goals are something to work towards on a larger scale. Short-term goals enable you to track your performance, sharpen your skills and provide motivation. They also allow you to enjoy the pleasure of celebration more often as they shouldn’t take long to accomplish. It is very important that you enjoy the road towards your big goals. That is one of the major keys to success.
Short-term goals can be whatever you would like to get out of the next week or month. It could be the clients you would like, the people you would like to meet or how much income you would like to generate.
Let’s move on to one of the biggest reasons for success, but something that is left out of most discussions as it’s not exciting, and sounds like hard work.
The principle of discipline has been all but forgotten in the modern, fast paced world. It is an old law of success and one that you should ingrain on your mind from this point forward. It is vital and you must remember this. Beside this, you should be disciplined in both your marketing and actual writing, so that you can achieve the goals you have set for yourself.
Discipline was one of the core factors in the growth of my copywriting business. It kept me on track and ensured I hit my goals on a weekly basis. It also ensured that I started my client projects on time and finished them, well before the deadline.
Discipline enabled me to prepare diligently for the week ahead also gave me the spare time for the gym, hobbies and my other social activities.
Don’t take my word for it, just read a few autobiographies of some of history’s greatest men and make discipline part of your daily life. Discipline won’t guarantee success, but it will set the foundations that make it possible.
With the right discipline, many other factors fall in to place. You set the goals and plan the strategy and then you stick to it. If you do what is necessary, you can make your dreams a reality.
This is an old principal for success and one that should not be taken lightly. You need to be strict with yourself to ensure you do what needs to be done today – don’t wait.
Discipline builds a sense of pride, too.
A feeling of pride is the result of hard work and doing whatever it takes. By never compromising on your values, you will build an internal sense of honor in the short term and long term.
